Tome Kurata (暗田トメ, Kurata Tome) is a first-year high school student and former head of the Telepathy Club at Salt Middle School.

Before becoming the secretary at Spirits and Such Consultation Office, her goal was to activate the powers of the human mind to communicate with aliens.

Appearance

Tome has the appearance of an average middle school girl with black hair that is kept in a straight bob cut and her lower eyelashes are noticeably long.

She wears Salt Middle School's standard sailor uniform.

Personality

Tome is a loud, crass and obnoxious girl who has a tendency to overreact and showcase her eccentric side when interacting with people.

She seems to be a slacker, but she is passionate about the possibility of using telepathy to contact extraterrestrials. However, when the Telepathy Club's research into the matter bears no results, she quickly gives up. When she learns that Mob is an Esper, her passion is revitalized. Despite having the most drive to make contact with aliens and espers, Tome is just as slothful as her club members.

Plot

Spring of Youth Arc

Tome was introduced when Momozo Takenaka quit the Telepathy Club, putting the club in danger of being disbanded for having too few members and she desperately searched for a replacement, but to no avail. When Mameta Inukawa brought in Mob as a potential recruit, she made every effort to get him to join, but he didn't. However, the problem was solved when the Body Improvement Club generously offered to share the club room (instead of taking it from the Telepathy Club as planned).

Tome was shocked to learn that Mob was a real Esper. The existence of psychic power gave her hope that she may one day find or become the telepath she had dreamed of. She often takes Mob on "dates", during which they sit on benches and survey passers-by in search of Espers, whom he can recognize on sight. She and Inukawa are now some of Mob's closest friends.

Quotes

  • "We activate our brains to receive telepathy."[2]
  • "MOB-KUN, DO YOU FEEL THE RHYTHM!!?"
  • "Even Mob is lining up to do this. SO YOU'RE RUNNING TOO!"

Etymology

  • The name Tome is written in katakana (トメ), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (留, 登免 or 登米), it could possibly mean:
    • 留 - "station".
    • 登免 - "registration".
    • 登米 - "rise, ascend" (登) (to) and "rice, paddy" (米) (me).
  • Tome's surname Kurata means "dark/darkness, disappear, shade, informal, grow dark, be blinded" (暗) (kura) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta).

Trivia

  • Tome loves video games (and aliens).
  • Tome seems to get along better with boys than with girls.
  • In Episode 2, Shigeo Kageyama comments on how Tome shares the same given name (Tome) as his grandmother.
  • Tome shares one similarity with Tsubomi Takane as they both are dark haired girls who have significant involvement in Mob's school life. However, there are a few differences between the two:
    • While Tsubomi is presented as dignified, feminine and composed, Tome is shown to contrast her as an uncouth and overexcited tomboy.
    • Tsubomi is presented as a crush for Mob whom he rarely talks to while Tome is a close friend that he interacts with on a daily basis.
    • While Tsubomi is shown to be the most popular girl in school with a legion of male admirers, Tome is on the bottom of the social hierarchy with the three Telepathy Club boys as her entourage.
